A lot of people falsely think that the Australian Shepherd came from Australia. It is believed that Basque sheep herders are responsible for bringing the dogs to the USA with herd s of sheep. Those Basque herders later moved to Australia, and then to the United States, bringing their dogs with them.
The breed did not become stable until it gained popularity in the American West, where the dogs were cherished for their extraordinary capacity for work. Australian Shepherd dog training and breeding initially focused on ensuring the dogs were well suited for both the climate of the Old West and the task of herding livestock. Bred and trained for brutal weather conditions, long work days, and low levels of puppy aggression, Aussies made great farm and ranch dogs.
