There is a wide variety of dog training books on the market, and this great variety can become very confusing when you are shopping for the perfect book for you and your dog. Luckily, there are some tips that can help you choose the right book for training your particular dog. Here are some suggestions to aid you in selecting the best program for you.

The first question you should ask yourself is exactly what you are hoping to accomplish with the dog training. What you many not realize is that the true goal of dog training is forming a stronger bond between you and your dog, and a great dog training book will focus towards achieving that goal, not simply on training your pet.

An essential aspect of any dog training book is what techniques are employed to train your pet. Some methods work better than others, and some don’t work at all. Many different considerations need to be taken when selecting the technique you are going to use. There are some basic questions to ask yourself as you figure out the type of method you want to use:

• Are other pet owners employing this technique effectively?
• Is this particular method easy to understand or too complicated?
• Are you able to employ this method by yourself?
• Does your dog acknowledge this method in a positive manner?
• What sort of motivation for your dog does the author suggest?
• Do the rewards lean toward food and praise alone, or doe they go further?
• Will there be some sort of equipment to be purchase, like a clicker, in addition to buying the book?

You should also think about how old your pet is when deciding on a dog training book. If you have a puppy, or a dog that’s a beginner, then look at dog training books that will be geared specifically toward beginners. If your pet is an expert on the fundamental commands, you might think about a book that offers a higher level of training. What you may not realize, is that your experience level in training is also important to take into account. For those who are somewhat new at training dogs, some of the more complicated methods and advanced techniques for learning tricks might end up confusing both of you.

Be sure to take your dog’s breed into consideration when you are choosing a dog training book. Pedigreed pets will probably require some kind of individualized training. Fortunately, you can find specialized books that will help you to address any quirks your dog has as a result of breeding. However, you’ll notice that purebreds are not the only dogs that have specialized books about them. There are dog training books geared to specific mixed breed dogs as well. Hybrid dogs, or mutts with no proof of lineage, can obtain specialized training as well.

When you’re considering purchasing any book, checking out customer reviews is always a good idea. These users already own the training book and have tried the techniques. They can give you invaluable information on what works or not, and how worthwhile the advice on dog training really was. These comments are completely based upon the user’s personal experience, so you can figure out which techniques are better than others simply by reading quite a few reviews.

Finally, it’s always a good idea to ask friends and family for recommendations. Locate some dog owners and find out which dog training books they suggest. If nothing else, this information may give you either a starting point for choosing your dog training book, or may help you narrow down a list that is too extensive. It allows you to find out what people had great success at doing, and what methods may have been worthless to them. Just remember the most important part is that you and your dog find a type of training that fits both of you well.

For every puppy or dog owner it is only natural that they will want a well behaved and well balanced companion that is a joy to have around and doesn’t have behavior problems. No one wants a dog that is continually misbehaving or doesn’t listen to their commands. Some dogs have chewing or digging or jumping issues, while other dogs may have become aggressive. To get the kind of pet you really want to have, well behaved and relaxed, you really need to obedience train your dog.

To properly obedience train your dog you should get yourself one of the good dog training books. Without the information you will learn in a good dog training book you will be doomed to making mistakes that will hurt your training efforts.

Professional dog trainers are very expensive, so it makes good financial sense to learn how to train your own dog at home. Training your dog at home is not only a lot of fun for you and your dog, as long as you use positive training techniques, but it also will create a life long bond between you and your pet. The bond between you and your dog means that he will do his best to please you. Your dog will respect you as the pack leader, the Alpha dog, and follow your guidance rather than just do whatever please him.

So, how do you know which dog training program’s book is the one best suited for you? If you check the Internet or your book store, you can see there are many different dog training books. Naturally, some of these books are much better done, and offer quality step by step advice that really works.

The best dog training books all teach using positive reinforcement training methods. Harsher methods involving yelling or hitting your dog are not recommended. You can probably get your dog to sit if you intimidate or physically punish him, but this will ruin any bond of trust and confidence you want to establish, and also make the training no fun at all for you or your dog. The best trainers emphasize that obedience training should be done in a manner that best communicates with the dog on the dog’s own level. Dog owners usually make the mistake of trying to teach their dogs as if the dogs were human instead of canines. The best dog training books will not only teach you what you should be doing to communicate and train your dog effectively, but also how to avoid the common mistakes that make training more difficult. You will see that avoiding mistakes is almost as important to getting good results as the rest of the training. To get the best results, use the right training techniques right from the start, and apply them several times daily.

Dog training should never be something you don't enjoy doing although it ends up being just a chore for many. Dog training exercises should be fun and satisfying – both for you and your dog. And they will be, as long as you have the right attitude and approach things in the appropriate way.

Like us, dogs can get cranky when they're tired. And if they aren’t in the mood to work for a reward they probably won’t. But if you can get their attention by using a game, training will always be fun, effective and positive.

The “come” command is one of the most important and although it isn’t that hard to learn, it is hard to get consistency. The world is full of amazing sights and smells and your dog will be very tempted to explore new things than respond to you when you call. Continuous re-enforcment is the only way to get the consistency you need. That doesn't sound interesting? Well, our kids stumbled on an excellent exercise that we now use all the time and that has resulted in a consistent and conditioned response when we call our dogs. And that, is hide and seek!

Use Games in Your Dog Training

Prepare some chicken dog peices or whatever treat your dog loves and pick a time when he's a little hungry. Put him in a stay and then go hide in a different room. Make it fun – get behind a door, stand in the tub – something unusual. Nex, call him [her]. He'll [she'll] come as fast as he [she] can. It may take a couple of minutes for your dog to figure out where you are if you've really hidden. It's hilarious watching them race in and start sniffing around looking for you! And of course, make sure you give him [her] a treat when he [she] finds you!

The kids could do this for hours. The howls are hilarious and make the game even more fun - for the dogs and the kids. Your dog is re-enforcing the conditioned response of coming when her [his] name is called and its FUN. The other benefit of making this game a family activity is that your dog is learning to respond to the come command from all members of the family. Feeling silly shouldn't be a worry for any adult - it's a great exercise for us as well. You might feel a bit out of place the first time you stand in the bath tub waiting for your dog to find you but when he rushes in and immediately gets his head around the curtain and starts sniffing, you'll laugh outloud! You'll feel young again!

Training Should Progress Logically

Of course, this isn’t the first dog training exercise you need to master. The need to learn to focus on you - otherwise you won't be able to teach them anything else. And you should probably do some homework and consult one of the better dog obedience training books. But if you’re always looking for ways to make the training fun, it’s going to be. Not just for you, but for the whole family and your dog.
