Most dog owners understand that their pet dogs have to have physical and mental stimulation to make them more comfortable everyday. Animal specialists also explain that without having any of these stimuli, a dog may be very prone to display some behavioral problems such as chewing, barking, restlessness, and the like.

That is why being a dog owner is not all about feeding your pet. It is important that you spend some of your time with your dog doing some dog walking for instance. However this could still be a problem when you’re too busy as well as preoccupied to do some bonding moments with your pet. At this stage , a dog walker can be very useful.

If you are looking for someone who is reliable enough to take your pet dog for a walk, it is best to definitely think about obtaining the services of dog walking Berkshire. The dog walkers enable your pet to have plenty of time for a really good run around while also building a good relationship with other dogs and also the walker himself. The paths that are selected for the walks are often changed to be certain that your pet and the other dogs always feel fascinated. This activity can greatly help your dog boost his interacting skills. For that reason, he will feel more happy and less anxious.

If you’re considering getting the services of dog walking Berkshire, you will need to first have your dog evaluated. More often than not, the consultation or assessment costs nothing, so you will not have to worry about the price. This is a good opportunity also for you to meet the dog walkers before deciding on anything.

After you have decided to hire the services of a dog walker, your pet will be offered a week of one to one walking. This is significant since it gives the opportunity for the walker and the dog also to get to know each other. Dog walkers have to be mindful of a dog’s habits and the way it responds to several situations. Following this first week, your dog is going to be joined in a group of at most six dogs during the dog walking sessions.

Boxers are a superb for any energetic individual or family. Boxers are a very devoted, energetic, inquisitive and social breed. Because of their loyalty they make great watch dogs.
Boxers can sometimes be stubborn, making training more difficult than other breeds. To resolve this obedience training is particularly important. For this reason professional dog walking companies such as London dog walkers are often asked to help Boxers respond better to positive reinforcement training such as training with a clicker. Whilst a caring and protective dog, they are powerful so carefully monitor when kids are about. They are prone to separation anxiety and are easily bored, combined with requiring a lot of exercise, results them in not being a good choice if you cannot give them the time they need.
They evolved from an old battling breed called the Assyrian Molossian, that was fought in battles. This dog arrived Germany in the 1700s this was called the Bullenbeisser and used for its power, even in boar and bear hunting. It further developed into a general utility dog. When the Bullenbeisser and English Bulldog in the nineteenth century the resultant offspring was the Boxer. The name Boxer was coined because of the way they pawed at the air or ground during play.
They are an extremely well-liked dog, constantly in the top 10 breeds in most countries.
Boxers are strongly built and are sixty centimetres ( two feet) at the shoulder and have an average weight of 30-35 kgs ( 60-80 pounds). As a breed Boxers are part of the Working dog group.
Boxers heads are very distinctive, with short broad skulls with very powerful jaws and a square muzzle. The lower jaw protrudes beyond the upper jaw. Boxers were often docked and cropped, which is now prohibited in most countries. In the UK there is a naturally short tailed (bobtail) version that has been bred, and though accepted in the UK kennel club, this trait disqualifies the breed in many countries.
They are simple to groom with their somewhat short hair and that they shed little, so only require occasional brushing, a couple of times a week, to keep their fur in good condition. The [normal~ typical] colours are fawn and brindle, with a paler or white underbelly and the front paws, which may extend to the face and neck and all four feet. If they have more then a third white, they are known as white boxers. White boxers are about a quarter of all births. They are not albinos, but they do suffer from a higher risk of sunburn and associated skin cancers. Being observant of the condition of the dog, the faeces and skin is important dog care. The extreme piebald white marking gene, also results in [eighteen 18] percent of white Boxers suffering from deafness. Boxer clubs have banned white boxers from being shown and breeding.
Boxers live around ten years on average.
There are certain hereditary problems such as hip and heart related problems and seem to suffer from cancer more than many breeds, with a UK survey showing that nearly forty percent of Boxer deaths were due to cancer.
They are a great breed so if you have the time and energy for them, go find one!

Dog grooming is a critical component of dog care. Dog grooming involves a number of different tasks. Routine brushing and combing to eliminate dead hair, skin and general flotsam and jetsam. Bathing and nail trimming, as well as caring for your dog’s ears, eyes and mouth.
For good dog health you should groom daily, in addition it gives quality bonding time with your dog. Your dog will see it as another form of fussing. Dog grooming should be commenced early in the puppies life, build a daily routine, time of the day, same location and how. When starting dog grooming, be gentle, but firm, that way he will be relaxed, but knows that he has to do it.
The combing and brushing will look after your dog’s coat, removing all sorts of skin irritant and pests, giving a healthier and shinier coat. The exact type of grooming required depends on the type of dog, the below is generic and suitable for most dogs, but either verify with the breeder who supplied the dog, or research it on the net, or your dog sitter should be able to help.
Bathing
Bathing is a crucial part of dog grooming. There is no consensus on how often a given dog or breed should be bathed. The trade off discussion turn around natural self grooming preserves natural body oils. However bathing, even with specific dog shampoos will wash the natural essential oils away. So some people wait until the dog is dirty prior to washing. There is a man / woman thing, with women normally wanting to bath regularly and more often. Generally bathing around every two months or so should be allowed for.
It is important in bring up a dog to introduce them to bathing at an early age, so it comes naturally, and even enjoy it. So prior to a planned bathing of the dog it is best to brush the dog well.
It is a good idea to plan the dog bath well, get everything you need at hand before getting him. Bathing is particularly stressful for those in large cities, with insufficient space and without the delights of shower rooms and utility rooms by the back door. For us city dwellers, we must carry the dog up to the bathroom.
Keeping a secure footing is important, so place the rubber mat in your bath. To avoid ear problems, shield the ears by using cotton wool in the dog’s ears to prevent water entering into the ears. Some breeds with open ears such as Labradors can be particularly susceptible to ear problems.
You do not want to shock your pooch so use warmish water to rinse your dog. It is easier to use a shower or spray hose. Keep the nozzle head close to the animal and do not spray onto the dog’s face, as this could upset him.
Choosing the right dog shampoo is important, do not use human shampoos. Do not use too much and commence with the head and top and wash downward and in the direction of the tail. Be careful to avoid the eyes. Important areas to spend time on washing well are around the chin, especially if the dog is a messy eater, behind the ears, be thorough with the toes and the rectum.
Finish by rinsing with warm water, ensuring all the shampoo is washed out.
Do not forget the natural way for a dog to remove water is to shake, so let him and stand clear, after this you can rub him down. You may like to use a hair dryer, mainly women again! This is not really needed unless you are needing to take him out. Let him finish drying off naturally inside.

The other jobs of dog grooming and dog care will be dealt with later, including coat care, ear and teeth care and nail trimming

The Havanese is a Bichon Group breed, that includes Bichon Frise, Bolognese, Coton de Tulear, Lowchen and Maltese They are a good-humoured small dog, toy dog that were bred to be good companions, so are good with children. They like to have attention and will do many things to attract it. This love for attention does not make them an ideal choice for a busy working couple. They love following owners around the flat, however they are not possessive of their “friends”, so are superb with other dogs, pets and other animals. This seeking for attention often shows when eating, as they like someone present, so if you leave the room, they will often follow, eating as they go, which can be messy. They are a “real dog”, playing games such as tug of war with all their strength. Not the greatest walkers in the world, often liking breaks with games or just watching the world go by. Professional Dog Walkers such as London Dog Walking, if doing grouped walks will pair them with similar dogs, rather than big energetic dogs.

For dog care they are straightforward. One advantage of the Havanese is that they do not shed much. You may see on lists that they do not shed, this misleading as all hair follicles will have a cycle of growing and dying, shedding it hair, but this is variable and not often, so there is no strong cycle of hair shedding. The coat catches the hair and dander internally, so many people think it is non-allergenic, but they all release dander that can aggravate allergies. If you have an allergy sufferer in the house, have one to stay for a few days to check.

The Havanese have a slight wavy double coat, which is soft and light, with a denser undercoat.

The Havanese should ideally be brushed every day, as they have the tendency for their fur to mat. If you are not showing the dog, you can trim the coat. Whilst they have a good coat, it is a coat to keep the hot sun off the body, not warmth inside, so in some areas you may need to buy sweaters for them.

When you bath them, dry with a towel and allow them to dry off naturally inside, as they are susceptible to skin problems if dried with a hair drier. It is a breed that the kennel clubs, prefer and dictate a natural look, avoiding the bows and preferring the hair over the eyes, that protected their eyes from the Cuban sun.

The original Harvanese were white, but now they occur in all types of coat colours and patterns.
The Havanese has a solid appearance compared to most toy dog breeds. The Havanese weight ranges from four to six Kgs ( around 12 lbs). Its height measured at the withers is 220-290mm( 9-11 inches). The back raises from the withers to the rump which is unusual in dogs.

The Havanese move with an agile springy gait. The Havanese are good swimmers, but many of them do not like swimming, but be prudent close to waterparticularly if there are birds for them to chase.

They have almond eyes, with average sized ears that are well covered and hang down. The Havanese are susceptible to infections and diseases of the ear, so regularly inspect their ears and clean them. From time to time they may need inner hairs to be pulled by hand or tweezers. The tail sweeps over the back and is also well covered. The Havanese have very sensitive noses and are trained often for search. The Havanese are easily trainable so are often found in circus shows, tracking, hearing assistance dogs, mould, termite and drug search.

The Havanese routinely live normally fifteen years. Like many other pure breeds they suffer from a few genetically-linked disorders. These include liver disease, heart disease, cataracts and retinal dysplasia ( streaks and dots on the retina). It is advisable only to acquire Havanese from parent dogs who have clear eye certificates. Havanese may develop brown tear stains, this is more obvious on the lighter coloured dogs.

The dog originated from the now extent Bichon Tenerife and was taken to Cuba by traders and settlers. Being popular in Havana in Cuba. Internationally the Havanese is a new breed, rapidly growing in the seventies from only ten dogs in the United States. Though they were common prior to the Cuban Revolution, they, like many trappings of aristocracy were culled. Rapid growth in popularity now makes it difficult to find a puppy.

A superb family dog that is well worth considering.

As mans best friend, we want our dearly loved puppy to be well mannered in the different social situations he finds himself. This teaching needs to begin whilst the puppy is young. We want the mutt not to be frightened or aggressive towards individuals or other animals. Pooch socialisation is a key part of dog care.
Studies at Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine showed that the first 3 months are critical, and the easiest for socialisation. For many puppies this time is tackled by the breeder. After that time it is still key, but takes more energy and effort. This is also the experience of professional dog sitters who are often asked for help.
Dogs are so similar to us humans, if the first experience is painful, we will stay away from or be anxious in the future, so take things slowly and small. Encourage compel the puppy. If in doubt, stop and do it again later. Remember young puppies tire easily and need their sleep, so short and often is a rule to follow.
So what practical things should we do?
• Invite people, any friends and family, small, grand, different looking, different sexes. Be careful and vigilant with introductions to children.
• Introduce him to a collar and then a leash. Just put the collar on, later attach the leash and let him walk around with it, then you can walk him around a bit with it on. Carefully choose a lightweight buckle collar with a puppy.
• Visit your families and friend and families in their flats.
• Try and meet other pooches, particularly other sociable, vigorous and vaccinated puppies. Be prudent until the puppy is fully vaccinated, meeting hounds of unknown history.
• If you know people with mutt friendly cats, see if you can visit?
• Meet other animals, do you have a friendly farm near you? Difficult in towns, but if you go away for holidays.
• Life in a car is part of life. So take hound out for as many practical short rides in the automobile. Stop and let him observe the world pass by, in the safety of the car. This helps with him getting used to noisy. Introduce him to other piercing noises such as drills.
• Carry or walk him to places where there is local commotion such as the mall and open spaces. Find a restaurant or seat where you can sit outside with him and observe the world. Loads of people will introduce themselves to him.
• Keep him close to activities in the home, paying attention to safety, house work, preparing food and TV.
• Puppy grooming, quality time for the two of you, develop the routine of brushing, bathing and inspection.
• Careful with training the pup on stairs, if you are a typical town flat owner, this may be problematic.

Dog socialisation, start today and have a wonderful sociable dog.

The Scottish Terrier also often called the Scottie or the Highland or Aberdeen Terrier is reknowned for its characteristic terrier personality. There are four other Scottish Terrier breeds, West Highland White Terriers, Dandie Dinmont and Skye, Cairn.
The behaviour and qualities and more importantly the dog care of the Scottie comes from its historic roots. You should compare characteristics with with the other top dog breeds, of which there are around 500.
The Highland Terrier is often called by the nickname of “little diehard”. Originally coined in the 19th century by George, the fourth Earl of Dumbarton. George IV had a pack of Scottish Terriers, supposedly so valiant that they were given the nickname “Diehards” and were the inspiration for the name of his Regiment, The Royal Scots, “Dumbarton’s Diehards”.
As always it is difficult to know the real origins of the Scottie, but it was bred for clearing small rodents in Scotland for centuries. It could be the oldest of the five Scottish Terrier breeds and there are some references back to the 16th Century.
The source of the name “terrier” is the Latin terra meaning “earth”. The Aberdeen Terrier was a hunter where these short legged, sturdy dogs were bred for the reason of rooting out small pest animals such as badgers, foxes and rats out of their burrows.
Scottish Terriers looks are characterised by long fur, heavy eyebrows and whiskers. The wiry coat exists in many colors, including black, wheaten or brindle of any shade. Scotties with ‘Wheaten’ (straw to nearly white) coats sometimes occur, but may be Soft-Coated Wheaten Terrier or West Highland White Terrier.
Highland Terriers are sturdy, with a muscular body and a long neck. A Scottie has a long head relative to its body which averages about ten or eleven inches high. The Aberdeen Terrier has erect ears and tail. Aberdeen Terrierwere bred with strong tails so that could be pulled out of burrows when they were wedged after digging after vermin and voles.
Scottish Terrierhave small, bright almond-shaped and dark eyes.
The Highland Terrier personality is one of independence and will power. Often people say a Scottie thinks he is an Irish Wolfhound in height! To the point that he is quite fearless that often appears stupid in the face of a larger dog, when he suddenly realises that he is only nine inches high. Dog walkers love to walk them, they are never intimated by the bigger dogs!
Height at withers for both sexes of the Aberdeen Terrier should be roughly 25 cm (9.8 in), and the length of back from withers to tail is roughly 28 cm (11 in). Generally a well-balanced Scottie dog should weigh 8–10 kg (19–22 lb) and a female from 8–9.9 kg (18–22 lb). Aberdeen Terrier are about 11–15 inches (28–38 cm) in height.
Scottieare very attentive, playful and confident. Highland Terriers typically live roughly twelve years.
Scotties, whilst being very loving, can also be especially stubborn. Because of this obstinate trait, a Highland Terrier needs strong, but kind handling from a puppy or it will rule the home. Every new Highland Terrier addition needs to have a clear puppy training plan.
The Highland Terrier makes a great watchdog because it generally only barks when necessary and generally only for strangers. Dog socialisation is vital as it is a fearless breed that may be aggressive around other dogs unless introduced and educated to other dogs whilst a puppy or young.
Because the Highland Terrier were bred to fight and hunt badgers and other pests they are prone to dig as well as chase small vermin, such as Squirrels, rats, and mice. Yet another reason to recommend that Scottish Terriers are generally walked on a leash.
Whilst Aberdeen Terriers are generally a healthy breed they have a propensity of going down with some cancers than other purebreds. Studies have identified six cancers that Scottish Terriers are more likely to go down with ( when compared to other breeds) are: (in descending order) bladder cancer and other transitional cell carcinomas of the lower urinary tract (more normal in more mature dogs and more frequently in females so watch for blood in the urine, straining to urinate and often urinating – and get veterinary help); malignant melanoma; gastric carcinoma; squamous cell carcinoma of the skin; lymphosarcoma and nasal carcinoma.
Common prevention for dog cancer includes, ensure that your dog has little or no exposure to herbicides, pesticides, solvents and cigarette smoke; use caution when treating dogs with some flea medications; give a healthy, vitamin-rich diet (low in carbohydrates, high in vegetables) and plenty of exercise.
Two other genetic health concerns in the Scottie breed are von Willebrand disease (vWD) which symptoms are varying degrees of bleeding tendency, normally easy bruising, nosebleeds and gums that bleed.
The second is craniomandibular osteopathy (CMO); often known as lion’s jaw, that created major bony changes in the mandible and skull. Normally occurring between the ages of 3 and 8 months. The lesions stop progressing after a year, and may regress. The solid swelling of the jaw, drooling, pain, and problems in eating. This is also an inherited disease and if extensive, could be difficult for the dog.
Due to these inherited diseases it is advisable to buy directly from a breeder, who can show he has no problems with these diseases.
Famous Scotties include former President George W. Bushs’ Barney and Roosevelts – Fala. Infact the Aberdeen Terrier is the only dog breed that has lived more than three times in the White House.
Other famous people who are known to have owned the Scottie include: Bette Davis; Julie Andrews; Queen Victoria; Theodore Roosevelt; Shirley Temple; Tatum O’Neal owned a Scottish Terrier. She was said to be so saddened by her dog’s death to cancer and old age that she fell back into drugs.
The Scottie is also a player token in the board game, Monopoly.
A Scottie and a West Highland White Terrier are featured on the Black & White whisky label. In Enid Blyton’s Mystery Series books, there is Buster a Scottish Terrier, who is often part of the mysteries.
So all in, a rightfully popular dog breed, particularly in character per kg, but you will need to train and be firm with your Scottie.

Living through the credit crunch is difficult enough, but add pets which rely on you for food, shelter and medical attention, every little bit helps. It’s a sad fact that many dogs are given up or abandoned every week, as dog lovers fight to cope with the current economic climate. This is especially problematic for pet charities who have look after dogs when money is in short supply, living off on contributions to keep their dogs in good shape. Here are a few points which could help make looking after a animal on a budget more manageable: 1. Consider every pet expenditure? Do you need that branded dog food or product? Is a retailer as good as Perdigree? Easier said than done, bring pets up with variety, equally dry and wet, as well as different brands and flavours. Keep an eye on promotions. You can stock up. Investigate vouchers, search on the net for some promotions. Buy based on price per pound / Kg, as sometimes, especially with promotions, the smaller pack can be cheaper. 2. Wherever possible, pet owners can often club together to buy feed and bedding in bulk, reducing the total price and passing on savings to all. 3. Veterinary bills are unknown but must be considered. If money’s a little stretched, you may find a lot of Vets will allow you to spread the cost, and pay in instalments. If you can, afford it – have or keep pet insurance. 4. Can you modify the way you live? It’s not all about finding ways to keep your animal more economically, what about yourself! 5. Can you earn some money? Why not offer to walk other peoples dog? Dog Walking as a profession Good companies will require you do it regularly. There is also the possibility of becoming a pet sitter, though professional companies such as London Pet Sitting will require you also to do dog walking in London. 6. What about your other pets, you may have put your cats in a cattery, what about using a cat sitter? The animal may prefer it and the pet sitters often do other things. 7. Do use external stabling or boarding? Most horses can live quite contentedly outside for most of the year, just make sure there’s food, water and protection to harsh elements available. Could this be an option for your horse, it could reduce the outlay on stabling significantly. 8. Are you thinking of choosing a pet, please think about rescuing an animal from a charity, they are suffering during this crisis. Enjoy your dog, they are worth the cost.

With nicer weather coming, its a great time to get out there and enjoy some walks with your favorite pooch. Are your dog walks resembling a marathon – with you in 2nd place behind your dog? These tips are for you!

Mixing It Up

Abruptly changing the direction you’re heading in may be enough distraction to make your dog understand that he needs to follow you. Whenever your dog tugs on the leash or begins to get ahead of you, abruptly turn and start walking in the opposite direction. When he obeys and returns to your side, be sure to follow up with praise and/or a small dog treat. Its pointless to scold your dog, catching him off guard and redirecting his attention is far more effective.

You may have to repeat this many times , even if it means your “walk” is only a few steps at a time, back and forth. You want your dog to carefully watch your movements; thereby following you and not the other way around. Repeating this process and giving praise and treats when he responds positively, quite often fixes the tug of war game some dogs like to play.

If you already own a dog training collar that has both positive and negative tone reinforcement, now would be a good time to use it.

Consistency is Important

Now that you’ve made up your mind to leash train your dog, always be consistent. Dogs can be easily confused when the rules aren’t consistent. Think of this like you would any other dog obedience training.

Initially its best if you stick to familiar places, like your backyard or driveway, to practice your new leash training skills. Once your dog has mastered the art of following you, you can then move on to longer walks in other places.

Keep Up the Good Work

As with all dog training, teaching your dog to walk properly on a leash is an ongoing process. Don’t expect instant understanding. Your dog may need more than one training session to fully understand what you’re trying to teach him. You’ll want to continue to use this technique occasionally to keep your dog on his toes and reinforce his new behavior.

Be generous with your praise – act as though your dog just did the smartest thing ever! Dogs love being rewarded for doing the right thing. Be generous with your praise and offer rewards when your dog is doing the right thing; he will be encouraged to continue payinging attention to you.
